A trip round some of the Fields of the Mighty Eighth

Welcome.

In July 2001, we made a flying trip round as many of the old wartime US 8th AF bases in East Anglia as we could visit in a single day. Most of them have now returned to agriculture, some are thriving airports and others still retain a small flying connection. Most of the runways have now crumbled into oblivion, so we made this trip by helicopter so that we could get round as many of them as possible. At many, we were probably the first flying machine to land there for 20 or more years. We took as many photographs as we could, and they are reproduced here for your interest. Please do feel free to copy them as you wish. To speed the download process, they have been compressed to file sizes of around 50k each. The original photos from the digital camera are larger at approx 250k each, and consequently have a slightly better resolution. If anybody has a specific requirement for one of these, please do e mail me and I can e mail the original picture direct to you. The names of the pictures should be self explanatory, generally there are a couple of approach shots and at least one on the ground at each site.

We were unfortunately unable to visit some sites due to the Foot and Mouth disease epidemic that was raging in the UK at the time, so we apologise if we did not get to the one that you are specifically interested in.

We would like to dedicate this trip and these pictures to the brave young men that flew from these sites never to return.
